Fidyah is the financial compensation paid in case of failure to fulfill the fasting or pilgrimage. Fidyah means the price paid to relieve a person's distress. Therefore, one fidyah is enough to cover one person's food needs for one day. This amount is the same as the amount of sadaqa al-fitr.
In the Holy Qur'an, the ransom is described as follows. "(The fasting that is obligatory upon you) is on numbered days. And if any of you is sick or traveling, he shall fast on the other days as many days as he has missed. And on those who endure it, a ransom is required, enough to feed one poor person. And whoever increases the ransom for good, it is better for him. Nevertheless, it is better for you to fast, if you know." (Surat al-Baqarah, 184)
