Ramadan and Religious Generosity

Iftar time is the end of the period during Ramadan when Muslims are not supposed to eat during the day. This moment is usually determined by the time of evening prayers. Iftar is a special time when families gather together, pray, and are allowed to break their fast and eat and drink.

Sahur is the last time to eat and drink before the start of the Ramadan fast. Sahur is done just before the beginning of the fasting time, known as imsak time. Imsak time is the last moments before the sun rises, and it is after imsak time that fasting begins. Muslims fast throughout the day by making sahur before imsak time. Sahur helps fasting people to maintain their energy throughout the day.

The calculation of the prayer times of a place is based on the results of "observed values" that are in accordance with the fiqh, not "astronomical values". For example, for the rising and setting of the sun, it is not the 'astronomical rising and setting' but the 'observed rising and setting' at the highest place of residence in a town. The values obtained by calculating only astronomical values cannot meet the fiqh values due to many factors such as height and land width that cause these values to deviate. For this reason, Islamic scholars have taken some necessary measures to secure the boundaries of prayer times. These measures and corrections are called "temkin". Temkin is not a correction made to be more cautious, but a jurisprudentially obligatory correction. The values that emerge after these corrections become in accordance with fiqh. Therefore, it is necessary to use the cautious times.

Anas bin Malik (r.a.) narrated: Zayd bin Thabit (r.a.) said: We made suhoor with the Prophet (s.a.w.). Then he stopped for the Fajr prayer. I asked Zayd: "How much time was there between suhoor and the adhan?" Zayd said, "Enough time to recite fifty verses." (Sahih al-Bukhârî Muhtasari Tajrîd-i Sarîh Tercümesi, vol. 6, pp. 268-269)

This shows the importance of observing caution.
